Compilation does not require judgment about product intent; it enforces rules on a fully stated program. Agents and chat models sit higher in the stack, where the input is incomplete and the output is a set of choices about design, APIs, tradeoffs, and what to omit. Treating them as compilers trains teams to expect mechanical fidelity where the real job is decision-making under ambiguity.
Market and tooling language still collapses those layers. Compiler metaphors sell determinism, reproducibility, and a clean contract: same input, same binary. That is accurate for LLVM-class tools and wrong for Claude-class systems, which are closer to junior-to-senior collaborators that draft, propose, and refine specification. Competitors and vendors who market models as code compilers invite the wrong evaluation: bit-exactness and zero judgment instead of decision quality, review load, and whether the model advances specification without inventing false precision.
Watch how teams allocate work across the stack. If Claude-like tools are used only as source-to-binary shortcuts, they will be measured on compiler criteria they will fail. If they are used to turn underspecified goals into coding plans and reviewable code, the right metrics are judgment quality, how many decisions they force into the open, and whether human comity still holds in the review loop.
