Custom OS installation now available on AWS DeepRacer devices

By Dillip Chowdary • Jul 21, 2026 • Source: AWS Machine Learning Blog

The **AWS Machine Learning Blog** announced that developers can now install a **custom operating system** on **AWS DeepRacer** hardware devices. This capability is enabled by a newly released **bootloader** designed to extend the usable lifecycle of the hardware. Previously, developers were restricted by stock firmware and software that prevented upgrading to newer operating systems.

Under the previous software configuration, the **stock firmware and software** limited system access, preventing developers from modifying their hardware to run modern operating systems. The newly released **bootloader** changes the device mechanics by allowing developers to upgrade or completely replace the existing OS. This technical change is supported by links to a **community distribution** built specifically around the new bootloader.

For engineers and builders, this release removes the software lock previously imposed on **AWS DeepRacer** hardware. Developers are no longer restricted by legacy stock software and can maintain their own custom software environments. Extending device utility ensures that physical hardware investments remain operational rather than becoming obsolete due to unmodifiable firmware.

In the broader market context of specialized developer hardware, unmodifiable stock firmware often limits long-term device utility once official OS updates cease. By releasing a dedicated **bootloader** and sharing **community distribution** options, the platform transitions from a locked hardware setup to an open environment capable of running developer-chosen operating systems.

Developers can currently retrieve the newly released **bootloader** and evaluate the linked **community distribution** to begin upgrading their devices. Moving forward, the practical focus for builders is evaluating custom operating system builds and integrating them onto their **AWS DeepRacer** hardware using the new bootloader.
