Elastic Columnar Metrics Engine: Uptime for Public IT

Elastic has introduced a new columnar metrics engine in its Observability suite, designed to improve data ingestion and query performance for public sector IT networks. The updated engine stores telemetry metrics, logs, and traces in a unified columnar storage layout. This optimization reduces storage footprint by up to 40% while maintaining fast query execution speeds.

Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) can query massive, multi-dimensional datasets using the new ES|QL language. The columnar architecture allows the query engine to scan specific metric fields without reading the entire record from disk, enabling sub-second response times for complex correlation tasks. This is particularly useful for public sector agencies monitoring critical government portals.

The release aims to address the soaring costs associated with cloud observability and data retention. By optimizing storage efficiency and query speeds, Elastic is helping SRE teams maintain system uptime without incurring unsustainable infrastructure fees. The columnar metrics engine is rolling out to all Elastic Cloud deployments starting today.
