Google I/O 2026 is just a week away, and the leaks suggest a massive shift in Google's ecosystem. The centerpiece is expected to be Aluminium OS, a complete rethinking of the desktop experience.
Aluminium OS: AI-Native Computing
Billed as a "web-first, AI-native" operating system, Aluminium OS reportedly merges the security of Android with the desktop flexibility of ChromeOS. It is designed to run locally on Pixel laptops with dedicated NPU hardware, offering system-wide agentic automation.
Android XR and Gemini 2.0
Rumors also point to the reveal of Android XR, a specialized version of Android for smart glasses developed with Samsung. Additionally, the developer community expects a "next-gen" Gemini 2.0 model, capable of massive 10-million token context windows and multi-step agentic reasoning.
