Google Passkey Update: Log in with Selfie Facial Biometrics

Google is taking another step toward a passwordless future with an update to its passkey system that allows users to authenticate using selfie facial biometrics. The feature utilizes the WebAuthn standard to verify the user's identity directly on the device, without transmitting sensitive biometric data to Google's servers. This update is designed to simplify account recovery for users who lose their physical security keys.

The selfie authentication system uses advanced depth sensing and liveliness checks to prevent spoofing attempts that utilize static photographs or digital displays. By requiring the user to blink or turn their head, the system confirms a live human is presenting the request. This provides a robust layer of protection against phishing and remote account takeover attacks.

Security professionals have welcomed the feature, noting that traditional recovery methods like SMS codes are highly vulnerable to SIM swapping exploits. Passkeys offer cryptographic security that cannot be intercepted via telecommunication networks. Google plans to roll out facial biometrics authentication to all consumer accounts over the coming weeks.
