Honda and QuantumScape Sign Multi-Year Solid-State Battery Development Deal

Honda and QuantumScape announced a multi-year joint development agreement on June 18, 2026, aimed at advancing QuantumScape's lithium-metal solid-state battery technology toward production for Honda's next-generation EV platforms.
The deal builds directly on a completed technology-evaluation agreement between the two companies, under which Honda ran a hands-on technical study of QuantumScape's solid-state platform and benchmarked it against standard industry tests before committing to the deeper partnership.
QuantumScape's pitch for lithium-metal solid-state cells centers on higher energy density, faster charging, and improved safety compared with conventional lithium-ion chemistry — the same properties that have made solid-state batteries a multi-year target for automakers without yet reaching cost-effective mass production.
The new program covers both further battery development and the manufacturing processes needed to build the cells at scale, which is typically the harder half of the solid-state promise — plenty of chemistries have looked good in the lab without a viable path to a production line.
Honda joins Volkswagen's battery unit PowerCo SE, which already has a manufacturing agreement with QuantumScape, as a second major automaker betting directly on QuantumScape's solid-state platform rather than developing the chemistry in-house.
