What happened
Z.ai, the Chinese AI startup behind the largely open source GLM series of language models, has released GLM-5.3. The new model brings substantial gains in long-horizon coding and a more consequential, potentially sensitive jump in cybersecurity capabilities. Those cyber capabilities have already been used to find a potentially serious vulnerability in Cursor, the AI coding startup.

To install or upgrade, go to Z.ai and use the official GLM-5.3 release rather than an older GLM model. If you already run an earlier GLM model, replace that setup with GLM-5.3 from Z.ai so you pick up the long-horizon coding and cybersecurity changes in this release. Confirm you are on GLM-5.3 after the switch, and do not assume an older GLM lineup model already includes these updates.
Market and competitive context
Treat the new cybersecurity capabilities as sensitive, and do not treat a successful install as a green light to probe other systems. The report that GLM-5.3 found a potentially serious vulnerability in Cursor is a reminder to verify that finding with Cursor and with Z.ai, and to apply any official Cursor fix if one is issued. After upgrade, confirm you are running GLM-5.3 from Z.ai and that any Cursor-related follow-up you take comes from those official sources, as reported by VentureBeat.
