The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the biggest camera upgrade Apple has shipped in years — and the most expensive, with India pricing up Rs 30,000 over the iPhone 17 Pro Max despite local assembly. That is the central tension in one of the first Indian hands-on reviews, from Telugu tech YouTuber Prasad of Prasadtechintelugu, whose unboxing and testing this coverage is based on.
The review's framing is blunt: local assembly was expected to hold prices near last year's levels, and even inflation only explained about a Rs 10,000 rise. Instead the 18 Pro Max starts at Rs 1,79,900, the 2TB model reaches Rs 3,29,900 — the most expensive iPhone ever sold in India — and Apple has offered no specific justification for the extra premium. Design and display: 6.9-inch M6 OLED, 249 grams
The 18 Pro Max keeps a familiar silhouette but gains real weight — 249g against last year's 231g, close to a quarter kilogram, to make room for a bigger battery and upgraded cooling. Burgundy is this year's hero color, replacing orange; the new Glacier shade drew a memorable comparison in the review to the Indian cricket team's jersey blue, and black joins silver to round out the lineup.
The display is a 6.9-inch M6 OLED panel at 120Hz — first-mover hardware the review expects to remain the standard for the next two years before rivals like Samsung's Galaxy S27 Ultra pick up the same generation of panel. The Dynamic Island is physically smaller this year: Apple moved the IR camera out to the left of the sensor cluster, and the review notes it stays faintly visible on dark wallpapers if you look for it. The software now runs three Live Activities in the island at once.
Variable-aperture camera: the headline hands-on finding

Photographic Styles grew three new axes — palette for color mapping, texture for skin rendering, and grain for adding intentional film-style grain rather than digital noise. And buried at the bottom of the camera settings is Apple Reference Image, which stores pixel-level capture data in the cloud as a kind of digital negative, cryptographically sealing a photo's authenticity against later manipulation.

Video and audio: Smart Focus tracking and Audio Mix
Three video changes stood out in testing. Time-lapse now records in 4K Dolby Vision HDR. Smart Focus tracking — absent on the 17 Pro Max — locks onto a subject with a double tap and keeps tracking them even if they briefly leave and re-enter the frame. And cinematic-style focus can now be adjusted after capture on standard video, not just clips shot in Cinematic mode. On the audio side, the new Audio Mix tool uses an in-frame slider to isolate a chosen sound source — an instrument, a voice — while suppressing ambient noise, a feature the 17 Pro Max simply does not have.
A20 Pro performance and battery
The A20 Pro moves to a 2-nanometer build, doubles the Neural Engine from 16 to 32 cores, adds a GPU core, and pairs it all with an improved vapor chamber over the 17 Pro Max's thermal design. Battery capacity jumps from 4,823 mAh to 5,391 mAh — the largest ever in an iPhone — and wired charging rises from 40W to 60W. In the review's assessment these two numbers, alongside the camera, are what a prospective upgrader is actually paying for.
Verdict: who should buy it
The review's conclusion is a split verdict. Photography professionals who want mechanical aperture control, and power users who will feel the 60W charging and record battery, get real value even at the higher price. For most people, the iPhone 17 Pro Max remains — in the review's words — a "Ladoo": nearly identical build quality, still exceptionally capable, and a far better value on the secondary market or during sales. Budget buyers are pointed at the more affordable iPhone refresh expected in March. At Rs 3.3 lakh for the top configuration, the 18 Pro Max is priced against high-end foldables, and that is the comparison Apple now has to win.
