NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies launched the LINK servicing spacecraft on July 3, 2026 on a mission to boost the orbit of the aging Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and extend its scientific life. On July 25, LINK itself lost attitude control and began tumbling — the rescuer needed rescuing.
Engineers traced the problem to two of LINK's three reaction wheels becoming inoperable, with the spacecraft's cold-gas thruster backup also degraded, leaving the team with a narrower set of tools than a normal attitude-control failure would allow.
The recovery approach being attempted uses LINK's xenon electric propulsion thrusters, normally reserved for orbital maneuvering, to arrest the spacecraft's spin — a use case they weren't primarily designed for, which is itself a sign of how limited the remaining options are.

If that works, the next step isn't simply resuming the original mission: engineers need to develop and test a software-based guidance and navigation update built around the degraded hardware configuration before NASA and Katalyst jointly decide whether a rendezvous with Swift is still safe to attempt.
Swift itself has been here before in a smaller way — its observatory lost one of six original reaction wheels back in 2022 and continued science operations on five — but that's a very different situation from the servicing spacecraft sent to extend its life now fighting its own multi-wheel failure mid-mission.
On-orbit servicing is being pitched across the industry as the answer to aging satellite fleets, and this mission is a live test of that premise under real failure conditions rather than in a lab. Whatever NASA and Katalyst decide about attempting the rendezvous will shape how much the industry trusts servicing-spacecraft reliability for the next round of missions, regardless of how the Swift rescue itself is ultimately resolved.
