Project Oberon Adapted for RISC-V Microcontrollers in Open-Source System Feat
Systems programming enthusiasts have accomplished a notable milestone by porting **Project Oberon**—the clean, self-hosting operating system created by Turing Award winner Niklaus Wirth—to modern 32-bit RISC-V microcontrollers. Originally written for custom RISC-5 FPGA designs, the newly adapted RISC-V port compiles its own kernel, window system, and text editor in less than half a second. The entire operating system codebase fits within 200 kilobytes of storage.
Educators praise the release as an essential teaching platform for students learning operating system architecture, compiler design, and bare-metal hardware interaction.
