Samsung can’t afford to play it safe with Apple’s first foldable looming

Samsung is staging a foldable-centric Galaxy Unpacked that is expected to be its biggest in years. The company is set to refresh its Fold and Flip phones and add a brand-new Fold form factor that is shorter and wider. That change would be the second major upheaval to Samsung’s foldable lineup in less than 12 months, at the same time Apple’s first foldable is approaching.
The product story is less about a single flagship and more about reshaping the form-factor map. Alongside updated Fold and Flip models, the new shorter, wider Fold breaks from the taller book-style shape that has defined much of Samsung’s Fold line. A second lineup shake-up inside a year suggests Samsung is treating foldables as an active product platform, not a fixed premium tier with minor yearly polish.

For engineers and builders, that pace matters because it rewrites the constraints they design against. A shorter, wider Fold changes aspect ratios, hinge and glass geometry, app layout breakpoints, and how multitasking and keyboard use feel in the hand. Teams shipping adaptive UIs, fold-aware navigation, or device-specific demos cannot assume last year’s Fold/Flip chassis still represents the default Samsung foldable shape.
Competitive pressure is explicit: Apple’s first foldable is looming, and Samsung cannot treat Unpacked as a safe iteration cycle. Samsung has years of Fold and Flip shipping history, but a rival entering the category raises the bar on polish, durability perception, and software consistency. A bigger Unpacked and a second form-factor upheaval in under 12 months read as an attempt to stay the reference for what a foldable phone can be before a new high-visibility entrant sets expectations for a different audience.
The practical takeaway is to treat this Unpacked as a form-factor event, not only a model refresh. Watch whether the shorter, wider Fold becomes a third parallel line beside Fold and Flip, how Samsung positions the new shape against existing Fold use cases, and how clearly the company differentiates the lineup so buyers and developers are not left guessing which chassis is the primary target. The next signal to track is whether that second upheaval in under a year settles into a clearer three-form strategy or keeps the portfolio in motion as Apple’s first foldable draws nearer.
