Snapchat Cuts Fully AI-Generated Videos From Spotlight Recommendations

Snap announced on July 31, 2026 that “wholly AI-generated” videos are no longer eligible to be recommended on Spotlight, its short-form video feed, and will no longer earn creator rewards.
The distinction matters: this isn't a ban on AI in Spotlight content generally. Creators can still use AI to edit or enhance videos they shot themselves — the cutoff is specifically for videos produced entirely by text-to-video or similar generative tools, with no human-shot footage involved.
Snap's stated reasoning is about feed quality: as fully synthetic, low-effort AI video has become increasingly common across short-form platforms, the company says it wants Spotlight to stay a place people go to discover “authentic creativity from real people.”
Enforcement leans on Snap's own detection systems, which need to reliably distinguish wholly-synthetic uploads from human-shot-plus-AI-edited ones — a harder line to hold consistently than it sounds, as generative video tools keep improving.
The move puts Snap in the same camp as other platforms that have started separating AI-assisted content from wholly-synthetic content in their recommendation systems, rather than trying to ban AI tooling outright — a distinction likely to keep evolving as detection gets harder.
