Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed on July 1, 2026 that it will stop manufacturing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028 — not an immediate cutoff, but a specific, dated end point roughly 18 months out.
Until then, it's business as usual: new titles keep shipping on disc through the end of 2027, meaning Grand Theft Auto 6 — the most anticipated console launch of the decade — lands squarely inside the final disc window and could end up one of the last must-have physical PlayStation releases.
The company's math is straightforward: downloads already account for 85% of the roughly 318 million game units Sony sold last year, so physical manufacturing has been serving a shrinking minority of the business for a while before this became official policy.

Sony's CFO has since reiterated the company is moving "cautiously" on execution even with the date set, suggesting the January 2028 line is a real commitment but not one Sony is treating as urgent to accelerate.
For collectors and game preservationists, an 18-month runway is enough time to stock up but not enough to change the underlying trajectory — once major publishers stop pressing discs for new titles, physical availability for anything released after early 2028 depends entirely on secondary and collector markets.
The specific date matters more than the direction, which surprised no one — it gives retailers, publishers, and collectors a fixed planning horizon instead of an open-ended "eventually," and turns what was industry-wide speculation into a line every PS5/PS6-era release will be measured against.
