SpaceX is preparing to build a terrestrial mobile network with the stated aim of taking “quite a few” customers from T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. That intent was laid out by SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell and CEO Elon Musk during the Q&A of the company’s first earnings call, as reported by The Verge.
The product direction is not framed as another wholesale MVNO deal or a pure satellite handoff layer. SpaceX is describing a ground-based mobile network of its own, built to compete for the same retail subscribers the three national US carriers already hold. The goal language from the call is direct: acquire a meaningful share of those existing customers, not merely fill coverage gaps.

For engineers and builders, the signal is that a company known for launch and satellite systems is treating terrestrial cellular as a core commercial product, not a side partnership. Network design, spectrum strategy, handset support, billing, and support operations all become first-class workstreams if that network is meant to stand next to the big three rather than sit behind them as infrastructure.
On the competitive map, that puts SpaceX in head-to-head contention with T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon for US mobile subscribers. Those three already control most of the postpaid and prepaid base; a new terrestrial entrant does not need national parity on day one to matter, but it does need a credible path to “quite a few” of their customers. The earnings-call framing treats that path as intentional strategy, not speculation from outside the company.
What to watch next is whether SpaceX follows the call with concrete network build details—spectrum, radio access architecture, device support, and go-to-market—rather than partnership language alone. Until those show up, the durable fact from this report is the leadership statement itself: terrestrial mobile, aimed at the big three’s customer base, delivered on the company’s first earnings call.
