Tesla and SpaceX formally announced a joint investment of $16.8B to begin building Terafab, a chip factory just north of Houston, Texas. The commitment ends months of speculation about whether the project would move from rumor to a real build plan.

Terafab is framed as a chip manufacturing facility rather than a design-only lab, which points to on-site fabrication capacity for silicon used across the two companies’ products. The $16.8B scale implies a full fab buildout—process tooling, cleanroom infrastructure, and production lines—rather than a pilot line or packaging-only site.
