Waymo Submits Telemetry Records in Federal NHTSA Child Safety Inquiry

Alphabet autonomous driving unit Waymo has formally turned over extensive vehicle telemetry and LiDAR recordings to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The federal inquiry was opened following reports of Waymo driverless vehicles exhibiting delayed braking or close proximity maneuvers near school zones and pedestrian crosswalks. Waymo stated that software updates have already been deployed to increase pedestrian detection buffers.

The investigation comes as autonomous fleet operators push to expand commercial robotaxi services into denser urban markets nationwide.
