WhatsApp is rolling out a package of new calling features that includes web calling, call transfers, a waiting room, QuickHD video, and noise suppression. The company detailed the changes in a blog post reported by WABetaInfo. The standout item is web calling: audio and video calls that run in WhatsApp Web so users do not need the separate desktop app.
Web calling is the architectural shift that matters most. Until now, serious call quality and multi-party call controls lived mainly in the native mobile and desktop clients. Putting audio and video on WhatsApp Web means the browser session becomes a full call endpoint, not just a chat mirror. Call transfers, a waiting room, QuickHD video, and noise suppression sit around that core: transfers move an active call between endpoints, the waiting room controls who joins before the call starts, QuickHD targets higher video quality when conditions allow, and noise suppression cleans the audio path on the client side.

For engineers and product builders, this is a signal that Meta is treating the browser as a first-class realtime surface for messaging products, not a limited companion. If your stack depends on WhatsApp for support, sales, or internal ops, users can stay in a tab instead of installing another client. That changes how you design “call me on WhatsApp” flows: device switching, multi-device presence, and fallback when mobile is locked or low on battery all get simpler if Web can hold the media path.
Competitively, this closes a gap with browser-first and hybrid calling products that already treat the web client as a full participant. Teams that standardized on “mobile or desktop app only” for WhatsApp will feel pressure from users who expect Zoom- or Meet-style join-from-browser behavior inside the app they already live in. Call transfers and waiting rooms also push WhatsApp closer to softphone and contact-center patterns, even if the product still presents as consumer messaging.
Practical takeaway: watch the rollout of web calling first and treat the other features as secondary polish. Validate whether your users’ browsers and networks can sustain QuickHD and noise-suppressed audio in real sessions, and decide if support or internal playbooks should prefer WhatsApp Web for transfers and waiting-room style join control instead of bouncing people to the desktop app.
