Apple is preparing a more focused and potentially much more expensive iPhone launch this fall, according to 9to5Mac. The cheaper base iPhone 18 is being held for spring. That leaves the more expensive Pro models and Apple’s first foldable iPhone Ultra to carry the fall release instead of a full-line drop.
The product plan is a deliberate split by tier and calendar. Fall concentrates on the higher-priced Pro lineup plus the new foldable Ultra. Spring is reserved for the lower-priced base iPhone 18. The launch is narrower in SKU count at the first window and weighted toward devices that sit at the top of the price range.

For engineers and builders, a fall slate built around Pro models and a first foldable Ultra shifts attention to premium hardware, new form-factor constraints, and whatever software and accessory surfaces those devices require. A spring base iPhone 18 delays the high-volume, lower-cost device that often drives broader app and peripheral testing. Teams that plan support matrices, QA fleets, and feature flags around a single annual cycle will need separate fall and spring tracks.
In market terms, the move trades a simultaneous full-range launch for a high-ASP fall event. Competitors that still ship midrange and flagship together in one season will face Apple’s Pro and Ultra story first, then a later base model. Apple’s first foldable Ultra also places the company into the foldable segment with a top-tier name rather than a cheaper entry device.
What to watch next is how cleanly the fall Pro and Ultra messaging holds without a same-season base model, and whether spring’s iPhone 18 is framed as a true volume follow-on or a delayed mainstream option. Builders should treat fall and spring as two release events with different device mixes, not one continuous iPhone 18 wave.
