Deep Dive: Power Grid Scaling, Direct-Liquid Cooling, and Megawatt Fabric for 2M GPUs
Deploying 2 million high-power GPUs across cloud infrastructure demands a fundamental redesign of data center power distribution and thermal dissipation. With individual Blackwell server racks exceeding 120kW power density, traditional air-cooling architectures are completely inadequate.

AWS is deploying advanced liquid-to-chip direct cooling, where synthetic coolant loops extract heat directly from GPU cold plates before transferring heat through external liquid-to-air heat exchangers. This closed-loop architecture achieves a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) below 1.15 even under full thermal load.
On the electrical side, AWS is partnering with regional utility providers to implement dedicated high-voltage sub-stations and grid-scale battery storage buffers. These battery systems smooth out rapid power demand spikes during massive parallel training runs, protecting regional electrical grids from sudden load fluctuations.
