AI Pioneer Barret Zoph Joins Google DeepMind Following Thinking Machines Departure

In a major executive research hire, Google DeepMind has brought on Barret Zoph, co-founder of AI startup Thinking Machines and former prominent research scientist at OpenAI. Zoph will assume a key leadership position focusing on scaling core LLM architectures and post-training alignment.

Zoph is widely recognized for his foundational work on Neural Architecture Search (NAS) and Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) scaling techniques during his earlier tenure at Google Brain, as well as leading key post-training infrastructure initiatives at OpenAI.

His return to Google highlights the intense competitive battle among tech giants to recruit top-tier AI research talent capable of pushing frontier model capabilities forward.
