Claude's new Personal Finance tool aims to help analyze your spending

Anthropic launched Personal Finance in Claude on Thursday, so people can share financial information with the chatbot and ask for insights on spending. According to zdnet.com's report, the mode reviews connected accounts through read-only access via Plaid. OpenAI's equivalent feature, ChatGPT Finances, launched in May. Claude and ChatGPT now both offer financial analysis tools. ZDNET senior editor Radhika Rajkumar reported the announcement from New York City.

This piece covers what changed, how the Personal Finance hub reads bank data, why Anthropic built it, who can use it, and what the company says should stay with licensed professionals. It is for Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers in the US who already use Claude for work and day-to-day tasks and do not want to switch interfaces.

Claude's new Personal Finance tool aims: what actually changed

Subscribers can link as many bank and credit card accounts as they want through Plaid, and Claude's access stays read-only. They can ask Claude where they spent their money this month or whether they can afford to take a vacation in six months. They can follow up on spending habits, trends over time, and future goals based on what Claude finds. Those follow-ups work like any other Claude conversation. The tool will also generate tables and charts to visualize the financial information.

Anthropic's feature responds to existing use patterns. Its April usage report found financial advice among the main topics users ask Claude about. "Like the rest of Claude, Personal Finance has no ads or sponsored recommendations, and it doesn't offer credit cards, loans, or savings accounts of its own, so your money questions get a straight answer," Anthropic said in the announcement. ZDNET disclosed that its parent, Ziff Davis, filed an April 2025 lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.

Anthropic listed what crosses the Plaid link. "For the accounts you choose to connect (and only those), Claude sees the bank's name, each account's name, type, and last four digits, balances and credit limits, and up to two years of transactions. When you chat with Claude in the Personal Finance hub, those conversations aren't used to train our models." The hub is its own mode with its own protections. If someone shares or discusses financial data with Claude outside that hub, the chat is subject only to that person's Claude privacy settings.

Anthropic's representative emailed ZDNET, "You can ask for a weekly spending chart, a calendar of what's due, or a dashboard of the numbers you choose, and Claude builds it as an artifact you can keep adjusting and coming back to." Anthropic said the feature uses actual transaction data, not memory, so it should not hallucinate. Anthropic emailed, "It can list the exact transactions behind any number so you can check its math. Like any AI, it can make mistakes, so for anything important, we recommend confirming with your bank."

Claude's new Personal Finance tool aims: why it matters

The April usage report is the demand Anthropic cited for the mode. Financial advice was already one of the main topics users ask Claude for help with, and Personal Finance is the company's response to that pattern. Anthropic emphasized which data the feature will access, and how, because of privacy concerns around sharing sensitive data with AI systems, especially AI agents. The training limit applies to the Personal Finance hub, not to an ordinary Claude chat about the same accounts.

The difference, and for many the appeal, is the natural language interface. Other finance apps do not necessarily have an easy, accessible chat function where users can send quick questions as they would to a human financial planner. These AI assistants present historical budget analysis in plain English, rather than requiring users to interpret dashboards themselves, which many users may see as a perk. A subscriber can keep asking follow-up questions about spending habits, trends over time, and future goals.

Claude's new Personal Finance tool aims: who is affected

For now, Personal Finance in Claude is available only to Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers in the US. Given the many finance apps out there, it may primarily be for users who already use Claude for much of their work and day-to-day and do not want to switch interfaces. The appeal for that group is a chat where they ask quick money questions the way they would ask a human financial planner. It presents historical budget analysis in plain English.

On Reddit, many users find ChatGPT Finances accurate and reliable. One Reddit user said ChatGPT Finance seemed to have Mint or Monarch potential, but noted it was still "weaker" than those apps in historical syncing, high-quality dashboards, and generating full statement PDFs. ZDNET editor-in-chief Elyse Betters Picaro was "incredibly impressed" with ChatGPT Finances and still uses it as one of several financial tools, not a replacement for professional advice. She structured her ChatGPT privacy settings to reduce security risks. "ChatGPT has genuinely helped me make better financial decisions," she wrote.

Claude's new Personal Finance tool aims: what to watch

Anthropic said users should not look to Personal Finance in Claude as a total authority. "Personal Finance is a first step. For life's bigger money decisions, we think people are best served by Claude working alongside the licensed professionals and regulated firms they trust," the company said in the announcement. Its email to ZDNET adds a practical check: Claude can list the transactions behind a number and can still make mistakes, so anything important should be confirmed with the bank.

Anthropic said, "We're exploring how to make that possible in Claude, and we'd like to hear from banks, wealth managers, and financial services companies who want to help shape it." The company was describing Claude working alongside licensed professionals and regulated firms on life's bigger money decisions. It indicated that a more integrated financial planning system within Claude may be on the way, and it called Personal Finance a first step toward that system. The invitees are banks, wealth managers, and financial services companies.
