The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration selected Google Cloud as the primary provider of high-performance computing infrastructure for the Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputing System, known as WCOSS. The partnership is framed as a modernization of how NOAA understands and predicts atmospheric patterns that drive everyday weather. Google Cloud will supply the HPC backbone for that operational supercomputing program rather than serving only as a secondary or experimental cloud option.
WCOSS is NOAA’s operational supercomputing environment for weather and climate workloads. Under the new arrangement, Google Cloud becomes the primary HPC provider supporting those systems.
