AMD has acquired Toronto-based AI chip startup Taalas, founded in 2023, in a bid to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in AI hardware. Taalas bakes model weights directly into silicon, with early demos of model-specific integrated circuits delivering up to 17,000 tokens a second and promising inference gains of an order of magnitude or more. The deal, announced at market close on Thursday, was not disclosed in financial terms and is framed around faster, cheaper premium inference for AI agents such as code assistants, in a similar vein to Nvidia’s $20 billion licensing deal with Groq last December.
