OpenAI is rolling out a major ChatGPT upgrade that reaches both paid and unpaid users. Plus and Pro subscribers are getting a more reliable version of ChatGPT labeled GPT-5.6 Sol, while free users are getting unlimited text chats powered by GPT-5.6 Luna. The split is the core of the release: paid tiers receive the reliability-focused model, and the free tier receives access volume without a text-chat cap under Luna.
The product mechanics are tiered by model name rather than a single shared default. GPT-5.6 Sol is positioned for Plus and Pro as the more reliable option, which implies OpenAI is routing paid traffic to a stability-oriented variant. GPT-5.6 Luna is the free-tier path and is paired specifically with unlimited text chats, so free users gain session volume on Luna rather than the same Sol stack. The naming itself is the public control plane: Sol for paid reliability, Luna for free unlimited text.

For engineers and builders, this changes how you treat free ChatGPT as a daily work surface. Unlimited text on GPT-5.6 Luna removes the usual free-tier friction of hitting a chat limit mid-task, which matters for long drafting, debugging writeups, and iterative prompt work that stays in text. Plus and Pro users still get the explicit reliability pitch on GPT-5.6 Sol, so paid seats remain the path when stability under load or consistency across long threads is the priority.
In market terms, the move pressures competitors that still gate free chat volume tightly while keeping their best models behind paywalls. OpenAI is using two GPT-5.6-branded variants to cover both ends of the funnel at once: reliability for paying customers and unlimited text for free users. That dual offer makes “free ChatGPT” harder to dismiss as a capped demo and forces rivals to answer either on free usage limits, model quality, or both.
The practical takeaway is to re-check which model your account actually routes to after the rollout. Free users should validate that unlimited text chats are landing on GPT-5.6 Luna and that quality holds for their real workloads. Plus and Pro users should confirm they are on GPT-5.6 Sol when reliability is the reason they pay. What to watch next is whether Sol stays the paid default for reliability and whether Luna’s unlimited text remains the free-tier offer without new soft caps elsewhere.
