OpenAI shares update on GPT-5.6 availability after holding back release

OpenAI has broken its silence on GPT-5.6, the model it unveiled at the end of June but declined to ship to the public. According to 9to5Mac, the company held the release back while the U.S. government reviewed the new AI models, and it has now shared an update on when customers will actually be able to use the upgrade.

The gap between announcement and availability is the notable part of this story. OpenAI showed the model before it was cleared to distribute it, which left customers waiting on a review process outside the company's control. A government review standing between an unveiled model and its public release is a departure from the launch cadence the industry has been used to, where availability typically follows an announcement within days.

For customers, the update at least replaces an open-ended delay with some expectation of access to the upgrade. It also sets a precedent worth watching: if new models are subject to review before release, companies may need to build that waiting period into how and when they announce. How OpenAI handles the remainder of this rollout will show whether the June unveiling was premature or simply the new shape of a launch.
