Spain-Based Startups Advance Regional Innovation With Barcelona

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) has moved its AI Factory Accelerator Programme from a pilot initiative into full operation, giving startups sovereign compute, technical support and training for innovation across industries. NVIDIA Blog's report says many of these companies are also members of the NVIDIA Inception program for cutting-edge startups. As of that October 19, 2026 post, access to some BSC AI Factory services is available through the NVIDIA Inception portal.

This piece covers how Inception now sits beside the accelerator, what MareNostrum 5 adds, and which products the pilot’s AI Champions demonstrated. It is for founders who need sovereign compute in Spain, for water, clinical and pharmaceutical teams judging Qatium, OneCareAI and Avatia, and for readers tracking the other startups in the BSC cohort.

Spain-Based Startups Advance Regional: what actually changed

BSC’s AI Factory Accelerator Programme is in full operation following a pilot initiative. Startups in the programme receive sovereign compute, technical support and training for innovation across industries. NVIDIA’s Inception program for cutting-edge startups complements that programme with NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute open courses, business mentoring, venture capital connections and other resources. Access to some of the BSC AI Factory services is now available through the NVIDIA Inception portal, the path named for those services as of October 19, 2026.

Three Inception members were named AI Champions at the pilot’s demo day: Qatium, OneCareAI and Avatia. BSC AI Factory is among Europe’s first AI factories and the first in Spain. Since the April 2025 launch it has delivered more than 800 services to private and public-sector clients. An upcoming extension of MareNostrum 5, BSC’s public infrastructure for scientific and technological innovation, is powered by NVIDIA accelerated computing and will deliver supercomputing access through the BSC AI Factory and other AI Factories across Europe.

Qatium’s water-network platform is already used by more than 250 utilities in 16 countries. Neural Water Intelligence, now in early production, is powered by proprietary AI models trained on MareNostrum 5. The build uses NVIDIA accelerated computing, the NVIDIA cuGraph library, the NVIDIA PhysicsNeMo framework and NVIDIA Nemotron open models. That technology helps water utilities make better operational decisions every day. MareNostrum 5 is also the public system whose upcoming extension will deliver supercomputing access through the BSC AI Factory and other AI Factories across Europe.

OneCareAI, a research spin-off from BSC, used NVIDIA NIM microservices to identify signs of hidden atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm, in seemingly normal ECGs. The technology is designed to help clinicians identify patients who may be at risk of stroke before one occurs. Avatia built a voice-first, multi-agent system of agentic coworkers for pharmaceutical companies. The coworkers support sales representatives and give doctors transparent, curated information about medicines so the right treatment reaches the right patient sooner. Avatia uses NVIDIA NIM microservices, the NVIDIA Nemotron 3 open model family and the open source NVIDIA NeMo Curator library.

Spain-Based Startups Advance Regional: why it matters now

The accelerator is in full operation after the pilot, and NVIDIA Inception members can reach some BSC AI Factory services through the Inception portal. Membership also brings NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute open courses, business mentoring, venture capital connections and other resources, alongside the factory’s sovereign compute, technical support and training. Since April 2025, BSC AI Factory has delivered more than 800 services to private and public-sector clients. It is the first AI factory in Spain and among Europe’s first AI factories.

Qatium, OneCareAI and Avatia were named AI Champions at the pilot initiative’s demo day. Qatium’s Neural Water Intelligence is in early production on a water-network platform used by more than 250 utilities in 16 countries, with proprietary AI models trained on MareNostrum 5. OneCareAI’s technology is built to identify hidden atrial fibrillation in seemingly normal ECGs before a stroke occurs. Avatia’s voice-first, multi-agent system gives pharmaceutical companies agentic coworkers that support sales representatives and give doctors curated information about medicines.

Spain-Based Startups Advance Regional: who is affected

Water utilities are the customers already on Qatium’s platform: more than 250 utilities in 16 countries. Neural Water Intelligence is in early production there, using NVIDIA accelerated computing, the NVIDIA cuGraph library, the NVIDIA PhysicsNeMo framework and NVIDIA Nemotron open models, helping those utilities make better operational decisions every day. Clinicians are the audience for OneCareAI, a BSC research spin-off. Its NVIDIA NIM microservices technology looks for hidden atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm, in seemingly normal ECGs and helps identify patients who may be at risk of stroke before one occurs.

Pharmaceutical companies, sales representatives and doctors are the users Avatia names. Its voice-first, multi-agent system provides agentic coworkers that support representatives and give doctors transparent, curated information about medicines, so the right treatment can reach the right patient sooner. NVIDIA NIM microservices, the NVIDIA Nemotron 3 open model family and the open source NVIDIA NeMo Curator library sit under that system. Agrikola AI, Elna Health, Lokutor, Montevive AI, Oppy, Pack2Earth and Up2Smart span precision agriculture, medical imaging and knowledge access, speech services, enterprise security, sales intelligence and sustainable packaging.

Spain-Based Startups Advance Regional: what to watch

The upcoming extension of MareNostrum 5 is the capacity step still ahead. The machine is BSC’s public infrastructure for scientific and technological innovation, powered by NVIDIA accelerated computing. The extension will deliver supercomputing access through the BSC AI Factory and other AI Factories across Europe. Qatium has already trained its Neural Water Intelligence models on MareNostrum 5. The factory is the first in Spain and has delivered more than 800 services to private and public-sector clients since the April 2025 launch.

Access through the NVIDIA Inception portal covers some BSC AI Factory services, and Qatium’s Neural Water Intelligence remains in early production. OneCareAI’s work targets hidden atrial fibrillation in seemingly normal ECGs, while Avatia’s voice-first system serves pharmaceutical sales representatives and doctors. The cohort’s breadth takes in preventing strokes, detecting breast cancer subtypes before biopsy, putting medical knowledge at doctors’ fingertips faster, replacing petroleum-based plastic with biobased compostable materials, and protecting crops with robots instead of chemicals. Agrikola AI, Elna Health, Lokutor, Montevive AI, Oppy, Pack2Earth and Up2Smart are the other named startups.

Developer Action Items

  • ☐ Diff the official changelog for Nvidia / Framework before you bump — APIs, defaults, and removed flags only.
  • ☐ Install through the vendor's documented channel in staging; keep a one-command rollback and time-box the canary.
  • ☐ Grep your repo for old flag names, lockfile pins, and plugin versions that the notes mark as breaking.
  • ☐ Prefer the first patch cut over the day-zero tag unless you have a reason to be on the leading edge.
  • ☐ If NVIDIA Blog did not name a region, plan, or SKU, screenshot the official availability line before you promise it to users.
