How to Install / Upgrade: OpenAI just upgraded ChatGPT voice mode in a major way, including CarPlay

OpenAI is shipping two upgrades to ChatGPT this week. The first is GPT-5.6, a new model releasing tomorrow. The second is an all-new voice mode experience for ChatGPT, which OpenAI is announcing alongside the model, and the voice upgrade extends to CarPlay, bringing the assistant into the car. Note that the source summary from 9to5Mac is truncated, so the full scope of the voice mode changes is not spelled out here.

There is nothing to install manually, since both changes are delivered by OpenAI rather than as a downloadable package. To get them, update the ChatGPT app to the latest version through your device's app store, or check for a pending update if automatic updates are off. Sign in to your ChatGPT account as usual, since model and feature availability is tied to your account rather than the app binary alone. For the CarPlay side, use an iPhone with the updated ChatGPT app connected to a CarPlay-equipped vehicle. If you use ChatGPT on the web, no action is needed beyond reloading the site once the rollout reaches your account.

The main gotcha is timing: GPT-5.6 is not out until tomorrow, so do not expect to see it in the model picker today, and the voice mode announcement does not guarantee the feature reaches every account at the same moment. The source does not state which subscription tiers get the new voice mode or GPT-5.6, so check OpenAI's own announcement before assuming availability on a free plan. To verify the upgrade, open the ChatGPT app, confirm GPT-5.6 appears in the model selector once released, start a voice conversation to confirm the new experience is active, and if you use CarPlay, connect your iPhone and confirm ChatGPT voice is reachable from the car interface. If none of that appears after updating, force-quit and relaunch the app or sign out and back in before assuming the rollout has not reached you.
