The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added a maximum-severity GitLab Remote Code Execution (RCE) flaw (CVSS 10.0) to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. Identified as CVE-2026-40192, the vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary pipeline commands across public and private self-hosted GitLab instances.
Exploitation occurs within the GitLab CI/CD runner dispatcher during crafted webhook payload deserialization. Threat actors leverage the defect to inject malicious runner jobs that exfiltrate deploy keys, cloud access secrets, and source code directly into attacker-controlled command-and-control servers.
Federal agencies and enterprise DevOps organizations have been mandated to patch affected installations immediately. GitLab has released emergency hotfixes for GitLab CE/EE versions 17.5.1, 17.4.3, and 17.3.5. Teams unable to patch immediately should disable public registration and restrict ingress access to verified IP blocks.
